El secretario general de ONU, António Guterres, llamó este sábado a la acción para lograr que la esclavitud sea un elemento del pasado, tras denunciar que todavía más de 40 millones de personas viven en esas condiciones en el planeta.
En su mensaje con motivo del Día Internacional por la abolición de la esclavitud, se refirió Guterres a situaciones de explotación vigentes, derivadas de amenazas, violencia, coerción, engaño o abuso de poder.
Explicó el jefe de la ONU que aunque la esclavitud moderna no está definida por la ley, se usa como un término genérico que abarca prácticas como el trabajo y el matrimonio forzado, la servidumbre por deudas, y el tráfico de personas.
En las estadísticas de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo se incluyen más de 150 millones de niños sujetos al trabajo infantil, lo que representa casi uno de cada diez en todo el orbe.
De hecho, una de cada cuatro víctimas de la esclavitud moderna son niños, de acuerdo con la OIT.
Asimismo, las mujeres y las niñas se ven más afectadas por el trabajo forzoso, y representan el 99 por ciento de las víctimas en la industria del sexo comercial y el 58 por ciento en otros sectores.
Al respecto, la OIT adoptó un nuevo protocolo jurídicamente vinculante diseñado para aunar los esfuerzos internacionales en función de eliminar el trabajo forzoso. (Fuente/PL)
