La especie se detectó en Cuba en el 2014, y se reporta su presencia en la mayoría de las provincias del país.
Puede impactar de manera negativa al ser humano y otras especies por su alta tasa de reproducción, capacidad de adaptación al medio y la utilización de diversas fuentes de alimentación.
También por ser hospedero de larvas del nematodo Angiostrongylus cantonensis, un parásito pulmonar de las ratas, las cuales también pueden accidentalmente infectar al hombre y provocarle meningoencefalitis eosinofílica.
Se ha comprobado que el caracol africano consume al menos 250 plantas, muchas de ellas cultivadas para la alimentación u otros usos, a las cuales el molusco incluso transmite enfermedades patógenas.
